Blind people have a very limited library to choose from, as only about 3% of the world's accessible texts are in Braille. Dot is a South Korean assistive device company that has developed new AI-based software to make more material, including photos, available to Braille readers. The company created a touch display called the Dot Pad that translates PDFs, text files, web pages and more in real time via a touch display.
Dot Pad, the tablet that brings the web in Braille
The Dot Pad converts material online using 2.400 movable pins. This type of "push pins" brings scientific graphs, maps and social media photos to life for all blind readers.
As mentioned, there is still (too) little Braille material around: this is why AI training was only possible using human work. A small platoon of experts gradually instructed the algorithm to better understand and contextualize every single letter, word or phrase.
Useful at home, useful around

The use of this technology in education can expand the ability of schools and offices to make their communications and public areas more accessible. The Dot Pad helps Braille readers interact with the world around them independently, from websites to customer service contacts to orientation with street maps.
The AI engine is currently compatible with iOS, and developers are working to extend the engine's general accessibility to other manufacturers. They are also focusing on how to increase the accuracy of image translation and use depth information in 3D modeling.
Another nice shot in the right direction: some time ago we showed the advances in the technology of these "Braille monitors", between first attempts with tablets similar and speakers that they "speak" to the hands of the blind.
Dot's work is impressive and has the potential to change the lives of blind people around the world: he has created a product that not only makes more Braille material available, but does so in an easily accessible way.
