But let's start from the beginning. Kepler is a telescope satellite launched on March 7, 2009 from Cape Canaveral, with the aim of discovering new extrasolar planets. And yesterday, in one fell swoop, Kepler discovered 1.284 new planets: "The largest discovery of planets all together", it was stated. Furthermore, nearly 550 of these planets are expected to be rocky, like Earth, and therefore could harbor life.
Nine of these planets would be habitable, because they orbit neither too far nor too close to their "sun", with surface temperatures that could therefore allow the presence of liquid water and even extraterrestrial life forms. «Today's discovery – announced Ellen Stofan, coordinator of the NASA project – gives us hope that somewhere out there, there is a planet orbiting around a star similar to the sun, and that it could be a new Earth».
