DICE is a piece of wooden furniture that seems to respond to the need, and I find it interesting because it shows a bit of the future of our approach to home furniture. We talked about it some time ago regarding the integration of certain domestic robots.
Here we are at more "analog" levels, but it is still a piece of furniture that contains four different functions, ready to transform at the touch of the hand. I present him to you.
The challenge of the multifunctionality of furniture
DICE is the result of a profound reflection on the very concept of furniture. In an era in which space, as I said, is an increasingly precious commodity, the challenge of creating an object that can perform multiple functions, adapting to the user's different needs, is more intriguing than ever.
And then strange things like this will emerge: a stool, a table, a footstool and a lamp enclosed in a single object.
A sculptural and functional design
The shape of DICE philosophically recalls that of a dice, with its square surfaces and rounded corners. It sounds more like Q-Bert to me, but I don't expect you to remember what it is. In any case, it is not just an exercise in style: each side of this "magic dice" is designed to perform a specific function.
Simply rotate the object to transform it from a seat to a support surface, from a footrest to a light source. The two round legs act as a support when DICE is used as a stool, while the triangular base and the tips of the lamp and table ensure stability in other configurations.
Technology at the service of furniture and craftsmanship
The creation of DICE is a fascinating combination of advanced technology and craftsmanship. The object is in fact sculpted by a robotic arm starting from a block of oak, following a specially studied 3D design.
The precision of the robot, however, is combined with the skill of the craftsmen who finish and oil the finished piece by hand. Inside the lamp, a cable compartment houses wireless and rechargeable lighting, surrounded by frosted glass for a soft and welcoming light. Another small example of Hybrid “coworking” between man and robot, another theme that we will see often in the future.
Portability and lightness
Despite its multiple functions, DICE is surprising for its lightness and compactness. The object can be easily transported and stored, even inside a bag. This portability makes it ideal not only for domestic spaces, but also for offices, public places and even outdoors. A versatile and reliable companion, ready to follow the user in his various daily activities.
Are we talking about materials? I mentioned oak, a noble and long-lasting material: an alternative to the culture of disposable items and compulsive accumulation. An invitation to reflect on the value of the things that surround us and to imagine a future in which a piece of furniture can once again tell a story and adapt to changing needs.
