Mad Bat, that is: the future is a tail sitter
Little genius
More than an aircraft (of which a prototype already exists), Mad Bat is designed as a real system. It can scale from small drones to personal aircraft, air taxis and more. But let's take a step back: most engineers use wings to keep the plane off the ground in hovering flight and to transition from vertical to horizontal flight. Techniques that end up "imitating" traditional aircraft.
Mad Bat doesn't. This eVTOL does something truly unique, with a heavily modified “tail sitter” system. The tail sitter, I'm telling those who don't know the term, is a tail sitter that modifies its attitude during the different phases of flight: its vertical propellers allow it to take off easily, but then move horizontally to ensure rapid flight.
The tail sitters used up until now were uncomfortable (take this ZEVA, for example): required the pilot to lie down in the cabin. Mad Bat saves both goat and cabbage, allowing the use of a tail sitter but also a very comfortable cabin, always kept upright with a gyroscope system.
How Mad Bat's tail sitter is done
The Mad Bat is equipped with four sets of landing gear on various parts of the wings and under the cabin, making it capable of taking off or landing like a typical airplane. The design, I find this really interesting, is accident-proof: this structure that surmounts the cabin automatically inflates a sort of "paraglider" which allows for a safe landing in any situation.
Furthermore, on the ground this tail sitter allows the aircraft to have a very small footprint: it can practically be parked anywhere.
Will we remember this type of invention as the one underlying all eVTOLs of the near future? If it doesn't bring out any weaknesses, this design could truly revolutionize the personal flight industry. Please take note.
