The iconic Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, will transform into a “super site” for COVID-19 vaccinations in nearby Orange County later this week. The reports the CNN . The fairytale city will open its doors to thousands of residents every day awaiting vaccination.
The Disneyland Resort, the largest park in the heart of Orange County (and the biggest driver of employment) has stepped up to host the county's first major vaccination site. “It is the start of a monumental plan in our vaccination distribution process,” says Andrew Do, acting chairman of the county board of supervisors.
It will not be the only "giant" used as a vaccination center
The resort won't be the only “super” vaccination center in the state. Also the Dodger Stadium of Los Angeles and the Petco Park of San Diego will be used to vaccinate Californians.
The news comes after California was hit hard by the ongoing pandemic. According to CNN , over 2.000 people are hospitalized with the virus in Orange County alone, 500 of them in intensive care.
The situation became so bad that officials had to send in refrigerated trucks to house the bodies, as morgues ran out of space to store the bodies. California has decided to distribute vaccines first to citizens who are over 75 years old and to frontline healthcare workers, as part of “Phase 1a” of the vaccination plan.
“It's important to vaccinate as many people as we can against Covid, and we need the space to do that,” the supervisor said Donald Wagner in the statement. “I thank the Disneyland Resort for choosing to become a vaccination center, and the city of Anaheim for stepping up a shared effort to provide OC residents with protection against the virus.”
