Visitors to the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida will be greeted by a digitally “resurrected” Salvador Dali. Developed using machine learning and deepfake technology, the digital Dali actively participates by talking about everything, even taking selfies.
On the occasion of the 115th anniversary of the birth of the legendary artist, the project called “Dalì Lives” it involved an artificial intelligence algorithm that scanned hundreds of interviews to learn the facial movements of the Spanish painter, and an actor with a similar build reproduced several scenarios.
An extensive work of hagiographic production and reconstruction then made it possible to develop phrases and expressions completely similar to those of the artist, to the point of reproducing this digital version of him for the joy (and undoubtedly amazement) of visitors.
AI and Deepfake are very powerful methods that will soon revolutionize entertainment too: the day is not far away when cinema will see new films by deceased artists, who will find life again by interacting with real actors. Copyright itself will be revolutionized, and in general we will have to consider this form of “artistic immortality” from a completely different perspective.
