During the First Look event of CES 2024, Samsung left the public speechless by presenting an unprecedented technology: the world's first transparent MicroLED screens. These displays stand out for their unique and futuristic design, and open up new avenues in the field of display solutions.
A window into the future of electronics
Samsung's debut in the world of transparent MicroLED displays is a "show of technological strength", and shows a bold vision of the future of consumer electronics. These screens, with their incredible clarity and almost ethereal design, look like something straight out of a science fiction film. Their effect, described as almost holographic, shows the contents floating in the air, offering a truly immersive visual experience.
The main challenge in creating these transparent MicroLED screens was to balance transparency and image quality. Samsung seems to have found the perfect formula, combining the transparency of glass with the visual quality of MicroLED. This combination creates an illusion that makes it difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is digital, making these screens truly design pieces of the future.
Transparent (and prohibitive) days
Unlike transparent OLED screens, Samsung's transparent MicroLEDs boast superior brightness, meaning they are less affected by ambient light. This makes them ideal for a variety of environments, both domestic and commercial, and opens up new possibilities for using displays in previously unthinkable locations.
Despite the enthusiasm surrounding these screens (LG also presented transparent TVs from the Signature series, I'll tell you about them in these hours) there is a reality that is difficult to ignore: the cost. If you consider that Samsung's current MicroLED screens (the non-transparent ones) have a starting price around $ 150.000 for the 110-inch model, it's clear that these new transparent screens will be a luxury for a few, at least for now.
However, like all technologies, costs can be expected to decrease as production increases and the technology becomes more accessible.
