When we think about the harm caused by cigarette smoking, our minds immediately turn to lung cancer and other respiratory diseases. There is more. A recent study published in Biological Psychiatry (I link it here) sheds light on an even more alarming effect: the reduction of brain volume, which can lead to dementia and Alzheimer's.
The study, which involved over 32.000 European individuals, revealed that daily smoking can also accelerate brain aging processes and increase the overall risk of neurodegenerative diseases.
The brain in smoke
The research team examined behavioral data, brain scans, and genetic risk factors to determine the direct impact of cigarette smoking on brain volume. Their statistical analysis showed that daily smoking actually leads to a reduction in brain volume, with an even more pronounced impact in heavy smokers. Aging already leads to a natural reduction in brain volume, but cigarette smoking significantly accelerates this process, leading to premature aging of the brain.
That's not all: the study estimates that 14% of global cases of Alzheimer's disease may be attributable to cigarette smoking. The good part of the news? The researchers point out that quitting smoking can halt the damage process, waiting for research to find ways to repair this damage.
Cigarette, let's get it over with
I think it is a good warning for public health that cigarette smoking is not only a threat to physical health, but also to brain health. Breaking down this dependence is a crucial strategy, and the states that are dealing with the problem are doing well even with super drastic measures (the New Zealand first, then Canada e Denmark).
In an era where awareness of the dangers of smoking is increasing, this study adds another important piece to the understanding of its devastating effects. The more we investigate this garbage, the more consequences come out: quitting smoking is not just a choice for physical health, but a fundamental step in preserving the health and integrity of our brain.
Come to your senses, smokers, and put out that cigarette.
