Schools are starting again, and it is often difficult for children #students stay focused and active during all class hours. But how to tell if a student is bored? Professor Wei Xiaoyong, who teaches science subjects at Sichuan University, in the Chinese city of Chengdu, took care of it.
The professor has developed software which, based on an algorithm of facial recognition, can identify bored students. Not to punish them, but to get useful feedback to improve their approach to the lesson. In short, the teacher wants to be as stimulating as possible for her children.
“By relating this type of information to the way we teach, based on a timeline, you can know when you have students' attention and when you are losing it. At that point you can ask yourself if it is a good method to explain a certain topic and whether it is good for that class,” says the professor.
The system has been renamed Face reader and it could also be applied elsewhere. In psychology, for example, to detect the facial expressions of patients or in all those situations in which it is intended to detect in a scientific way a mood or emotional state.
