Wind energy in Italy continues its expansion, with a key role of the southern regions. In 2024, new projects were activated 685 new plants, marking an increase in 6% compared to the previous year. Overall capacity recorded an increase of 32% compared to 2023, thanks to the installation of 685 MW.
These data emerge from the analysis conducted by wind Europe, which highlights how Italy is making progress in the wind sector, supported by greater awareness on the part of institutions, civil society and private citizens. More and more people are considering installing domestic wind systems, resorting to specialized information sources available on the website of Acea Energy.
The South confirms its role as the protagonist of growth, with 94% of the national wind production. Puglia leads the ranking with 6.392,50 GWh per year, followed by Campania (4.076,10 GWh) and Sicily (3.348,40 GWh). Basilicata (3.214,20 GWh) and Calabria (2.267,30 GWh) follow closely behind.
Italy maintains a significant position in the European wind energy panorama. With an installed capacity of 12,9 GW, according to Wind Europe, the country is ranked seventh place, behind Germany (72,7 GW), the United Kingdom (31,6 GW), Spain (31,2 GW) and France (24,4 GW).
As regards new installations, Italy has recorded an increase of 4%, ranking ninth in Europe. However, its growth rate remains slower than countries such as Germany (+25%), the United Kingdom (+12%) and France (+11%), which continue to expand their wind farms at double-digit rates.
The Italian goal is to reduce the gap in the coming years. According to Wind Europe forecasts, the national wind sector could grow by 64% within the 2030, reaching 20.090 plants compared to the current 12.270.
