Urban transport is about to get yet another little shock thanks to the arrival of Skwheel One, an innovative electric ski system designed by Parisian startup Skwheel. These devices that promise to transform city streets into slopes are equipped with 600 watt motors for each ski and pneumatic wheels suitable for all types of terrain.
Futuristic design and cutting-edge technology: an exciting new way for winter sports enthusiasts to enjoy their passion? Or a challenge to the limits of city transport?
Skwheel One and the art of urban skiing
The idea behind Skwheel One is simple but interesting: transform every road into an alpine descent. What can go wrong? Each ski offers a combined 2,400 watts of power, balanced by a carbon composite construction, front and rear running lights, and snowboard-style straps for added security.
They can deliver an impressive speed of 80km/h on private land, and are electronically limited to 25km/h for safe city use. The ability of these electric skis to traverse different terrains, both on- and off-road, is made possible by the all-terrain pneumatic wheels.
Safety and practicality: two fundamental aspects
Safety is a priority for Skwheel One, as demonstrated by the electronic braking system and the mechanical emergency brake. Practicality has also been thought of: the wireless remote controls not only control acceleration and braking, but also allow you to connect the skis together, transforming them into an easy-to-carry wheeled suitcase.
The overall lightness of 12.5 kg and the autonomy of approximately 30 km per charge make Skwheel One an ideal travel companion for urban adventures.
Crowdfunding
The singular and sui generis nature of Skwheel One fits perfectly with a fundraising campaign. The Indiegogo crowdfunding platform home a retail promise of $2625, but available to backers with a pledge of $1750.
The enthusiasm surrounding this project is tangible, but in Europe the "winds" for various micromobility tools are against it. Between the French bans on scooters and the Italian poles, the regulatory vanguard is decidedly hostile.
These deals are unlikely to become a trend. Perhaps those such shoes they have more possibilities.
