For over 45 years, BMW has been developing armored versions of its cars, and with this new series, the German company has raised safety standards. The BMW 7 Series Protection just presented at the IAA Mobility Show hides advanced safety technology behind its elegant design. A technology designed to resist bullets and explosions.
BMW 7 Series Protection, heart of steel
The BMW Protection Core it is a real innovation in the field of automotive safety. The entire body support structure of the sedan is constructed of armored steel with exceptionally strong, hot-formed alloys. This core forms a self-sufficient protective cell which is then combined with specific protection doors, underfloor armor and safety glass.
But the protection doesn't stop there. The BMW 7 Series Protection fears no threats from above or below. The car is equipped with special armor designed to offer maximum protection against explosions. The occupants are protected from drone attacks with explosive charges and from fragments scattered by grenades upon detonation.
Other security features
In addition to ballistic protection, the BMW 7 Series Protection is equipped with a self-sealing fuel tank. If hit by a projectile, a special casing allows the tank to seal itself, preventing fuel leakage and the potential for a fire to break out.
How much does the performance of such a car change? Not much, they say at BMW. Using sturdy materials in the frame, rather than adding them later, allows you not to compromise space inside. The car is as agile as non-armored ones, ensuring precise driving even in emergency situations.
Don't believe it? Under the hood, the 8-liter V4,4 engine of the BMW 7 Series Protection allows it to reach 100 km/h in 6,6 seconds. Surprisingly, the electric i7 Protection version is slightly slower, clocking in at 9 seconds.
BMW 7 Series Protection, the rest of the "kit"
The car is equipped with a system that reduces the turning radius, useful for getting out of difficult situations. Cameras around the exterior of the vehicle provide a panoramic view to the occupants. And for safe communication, there are microphones and speakers both inside and outside the car, allowing you to communicate with the outside without having to open doors or windows.
For those who want even more, BMW offers a number of customized options, including a fresh air supply system, a fire extinguisher with automatic and manual exhaust, special warning lights, radio transmitters and even flag poles for when the car is in official service.
Don't ask me the price, I'm not a target buyer: but if you like the idea of happily walking through a John Wick scene, feel free to ask for a quote.
