Aaaah, spring! A fantastic season of rebirth and renewal, and for many it represents the perfect time to do a little "cleaning" of their belongings, including technological devices. If you are looking for a new notebook, for example, this could be the best season to pick the most beautiful flowers in this field. There are many things to evaluate: I'll show you the ones I evaluate before choosing. And I'm not too subtle, even if I mainly use notebooks for my agency work (and to titillate the "AI" category of this blog, which has been smoking lately due to how much stuff there is).
For me, when choosing a notebook, 3 things matter, and 3 things first and foremost. 3 things “uber alles”.
1 – Is it big, big, big?
When it comes to notebooks, size matters. If you use your laptop mainly at home or in the office, in a mostly "sedentary" version (laptops are now replacing old desktop PCs) you might prefer a larger model with a larger screen. Conversely, if you have to move often, you may prefer a smaller and lighter model. Need we remind you that a larger notebook often means greater weight? Other than "gentle little butterfly". Choose carefully the compromise you need between comfort and performance.
Two examples from my "very personal card", two practically equivalent netbooks, but with different weights:
MSI Katana GF76: over 17 inches diagonally for the Italian “cub”. An Intel® Core™ i7 processor, a robust NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3050 graphics card, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of SSD and 2.6 kg of weight. Two large pineapples.
HP Pavilion Plus 14-EH0014NL: here the monitor inches are 14, and the weight is 1,4kg. In short, the pineapples are halved. But the processor is the same, an Intel® Core™ i7, and the graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2050, and the SSD is double: 1 Tera.
2 – Let's not beat around the bush: the battery
Battery life is another important factor to consider when choosing a notebook. And it is closely linked to point 1: if you need mobility, you need to manage a scenario in which you don't have power sockets at hand, otherwise how portable is it? You have to "put yourself in the worst conditions", as my physics teacher said: if you need to use your notebook for long hours without having to recharge it, make sure you choose a model with a long-lasting battery. There are also notebooks with replaceable batteries, which means you can carry a spare battery with you to extend the life of your work when you travel.
Apple MacBook Pro 14 M1: why i chose the mela to give this example? Because this particular netbook shows, almost in a paradigm, what can be done by combining mobility and performance. First of all the monitor: 14 inches, for a reasonable weight (1.6kg). Then the RAM, 16GB, absolutely respectable paired with the 14-cores offered by this machine. Finally, the battery: how do you see 11 hours of work? The duration is, to use a classical term, "remarkable".
LENOVO IdeaPad 5 Pro: There's a nice mix here too. Of course, not exactly the same performance as an Apple but a lot of stuff. 14 inches, Intel® Core™ i5, also here 16GB of RAM and an INTEL Iris Xe for graphics. Very reasonable price, slightly lower weight (1.4kg) and always 11 hours of work. Enjoy.
3 – Offers & Reviews
Are we social animals or not? We smell our fellow men, and Spring awakens our sense of smell. This is why spring often brings with it many offers on notebooks. There are many websites where you can find out about the characteristics of a computer, but nothing is better than reviews on the site where you will buy: there are people there who have paid, who have bought (perhaps even at full price, while you can also take advantage of a 'offer), tried and reported. What do you still need? Yes I know. Two examples.
Apple MacBook Air 13 – An example of a perfect mix. The car? Reliable and known. The discount? Very strong. The reviews? Different, but all of people dancing in the streets drunk with happiness.
LENOVO Essential V15-ITL – Here too the mix is the right one. Notebook with good features, satisfied reviews and almost 30% less price. Go and strike!
In short (Italian only)
Spring can be the perfect time to buy a new notebook, thanks to the many offers available this season. My personal advice (of course, then you have to borrow it with your needs) is to aim high. A quality notebook can last a long time and improve productivity: in many cases, lasting longer and doing better work practically pays for itself over the years.
To the wise connoisseur, a few words: choose carefully to get the most out of your spring purchase, and you will avoid the... seasonal "allergies"!
