This trash can (or, if you prefer, trash can) from the Danish furniture company Vipp it is inspired by the timeless original design from 1939. However, it is very modern in its philosophy: 75% of its materials are recycled, proving that sustainability can be combined with an attractive design. Do you know anything more futuristic than objects with an "environmental consciousness"? The message is simple: you can preserve the environment without sacrificing aesthetics.

Story of a bin

The starting material...

and the "texture" obtained.

Fu Holger Nielsen, Danish engineer and company founder, who designed and built the pedal bin Vipp15 way back in 1939. Its creation was a real revolution in the field of waste collection containers. Today, the original project has been taken up and revisited by a group of engineers who, with the intention of making some radical changes, have decided to reuse the company's production waste, reworked and transformed into a special fibre.

The material used to model the body of the can is a mix of waste from the production of tables and sofa casings produced by Vipp. Therefore, 100% non-organic: there is a minimal plastic component, but it is less wasteful to reassemble it into a new object than to make it make the infinite journey towards the landfill and recycling.

Garbage waste

The redesign is not about altering the original design, but about adopting a new method to create an existing can, previously made of steel. And the mission seems successful: of the 3,7kg of steel (today they seem enormous for a single bin) there seems to be very little left: less environmental impact, fewer emissions, same efficiency, unchanged elegance.

A stage in the making.

Vipp, as mentioned, uses a proprietary fiber to create its can, which has a natural grayish color with a visibly mottled surface. This creates an interesting and modern look. Also, there are no added coloring or embellishments. The appearance of the plastic fiber and sawdust in its finished form is what you see. Finally, a protective coating is added to preserve the unique look of the bin. This ensures that everything remains in perfect condition for many years.

In summary: if you don't want to give up your taste for design even for waste, now you have one more reason to choose: an object that is beautiful on the outside and beautiful on the inside.
