Next month, an artificial intelligence (AI) legal assistant will make her first court appearance to help a defendant in his legal case to appeal a traffic fine.
The AI, developed by startup DoNotPay and billed as the “world's first robot lawyer,” will be used via a smartphone. It will listen to judges' arguments in real time and provide guidance to the defendant via headphones. The creators of the brilliant “lawyer” have not yet revealed in which court the legal case will be held, nor the name of the defendant.
An absolute first
The legal case (the appeal against a speeding dispute) will see the participation of a defendant in the unusual guise of a puppet: all his interventions will be written by the DoNotPay AI. Which offered to pay the costs in case of defeat, through the mouth of its CEO Joshua browder (Stanford University computer scientist).
DoNotPay, startup started as a chatbot providing legal advice in case of fines or sanctions, it added artificial intelligence to its range of services just three years ago, in 2020.
Today, Browder's stated goal is to have his app completely replace lawyers in a “minor” lawsuit such as an appeal.
Lawsuit, special assistant
“There will still be a lot of very good lawyers,” Browder says. “Professionals capable of discussing important issues such as human rights before the European Court. However, many others may be replaced by AI: those whose work mainly consists of copying and pasting legal letters.”
What are you saying? You are right? The tsunami of artificial intelligence it could overwhelm even the jurisprudence, and make a lawsuit more accessible and convenient for everyone. Lawyers warned, means saved. Perhaps.
