Music is emotion, it is personality, it is a reflection of what we are and what we want to be. And now, thanks to artificial intelligence, we can have a tailor-made soundtrack for every moment of our lives. Spotify, the music streaming giant, is launching a new function that allows you to generate personalized playlists starting from simple text prompts.
“Spotify! Create a playlist that will make me trust in humanity again." Or, I don't know, “Spotify! Make me a playlist of tear-jerking songs but with a Japanese vibe,” and so on. Just ask and Spotify's AI will take care of the rest. Get ready for a musical experience like you've never had before.
From AI DJ to personalized playlists
Spotify had already found success with its popular AI DJ feature, and now the music streaming service is bringing AI to playlist creation. The company just introduced AI Playlists in beta.
The feature will initially be available to users on Android and iOS devices in the UK and Australia and will be refined over the coming months.
In addition to more standard playlist creation requests, such as those based on genre or time period, Spotify's use of AI means that people may request a wider variety of personalized playlists, such as “songs to make purr to my cat” or “beats to fight a zombie apocalypse,” Spotify suggests.
A world of creative possibilities
Prompts can refer to all kinds of things, like places, animals, activities, movie characters, colors, or emojis. The company notes that the best playlists are generated using prompts that contain a combination of genres, moods, artists, and decades.
Spotify also uses its understanding of user tastes to personalize the playlists it creates with this feature. After generating the playlist, users can use AI to review and refine the final result by issuing commands like “less lively” or “more pop,” for example. Users can also swipe left on any song to remove it from the playlist.
The technology behind the scenes
In terms of technology, Spotify says it uses large language models (LLMs) to understand user intent. So, Spotify uses its personalization technology (the information it has about the listener's history and preferences) to best do its job.
Last year, Spotify said it was investing in internal research to better understand the latest developments in AI and large language models. The CEO Daniel Ek also hinted to investors about other ways Spotify could leverage AI, including summarizing podcasts, creating AI-generated audio ads, and more.
AI Playlist, a tailor-made music experience
The introduction of AI playlists represents a significant step towards a future where music becomes increasingly personalized and tailored for each listener. Thanks to the power of artificial intelligence, Spotify can now offer a unique experience to each user, creating playlists that perfectly reflect their tastes, moods and current needs.
AI playlists are just the latest example of how artificial intelligence is transforming the way we consume and interact with music. From increasingly sophisticated recommendation tools to immersive and interactive listening experiences, AI is opening up a world of creative and personal possibilities for music lovers everywhere.
