Dental cavities are a widespread and painful problem that affects many people, especially school-age children. But now, thanks to a team of researchers from New York University (NYU), there may be a solution as simple as it is effective: the silver diamine fluorine (SDF).
This economical liquid has proven itself capable of prevent 80% of cavities and stop the progression of 50% of existing ones, paving the way for a new approach in cavity prevention.
A beautiful discovery
The study, published in JAMA Pediatrics (I link it here) is the largest ever conducted in the USA on cavity prevention in schools. Involving approximately 4.000 children from various elementary schools, researchers compared the effectiveness of SDF with that of traditional dental sealants.
The results? surprising: after two years, SDF proved to be just as effective as sealants in preventing cavities, with the advantage of being quicker, painless and cheaper to apply.
An important ally against cavities
The importance of this discovery cannot be underestimated. Dental cavities are an endemic problem among school-age children around the world. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to access medical care: for this reason the SDF could change the game by offering a solution within everyone's reach.
But how exactly does this “magic liquid” against cavities work? Once applied to the surface of the teeth, silver diamine fluoride does two things: before purchasing,, eliminates the bacteria that cause tooth decay; second, promotes the remineralization of the teeth, strengthening them against further decay. It's like having an invisible shield that protects your teeth from threats.

The researchers are excited about the potential implications of this discovery. It could result in fewer invasive and expensive filling procedures, and access to dental care for more people in need.
