Watching One Za'abeel emerge from Dubai's cityscape is like witnessing an act of pure architectural audacity. At its heart there is a “shelf” that defies all expectations: a suspension bridge connecting two majestic towers. This cantilever, which juts boldly beyond the base of the towers, is a true engineering triumph, and not the only one noteworthy in this structure.
An unprecedented engineering feat
Nikken sekkei, a prestigious name in Japanese design and architecture, has done a splendid job with One Za'abeel: standing out in the crowded skyline of Dubai it wasn't easy at all. The two towers of this large complex rise to 235 meters (770 feet) and 305 meters (1.000 feet) respectively, hosting residential spaces, offices and a hotel, all developed on a common base with a green roof. And then there's it, the shelf.
Already. The real protagonist of One Za'abeel is his horizontal bridge, called “Link”. Anchored by both towers at a height of 100 meters (328 feet) above a busy highway, the Link measures 230 meters (754 feet) in length, with a cantilevered section of 66 meters (216 feet), the longest in the world.
In addition to offering an infinity pool and panoramic views, the Link stands out for its spectacular interiors, enriched by restaurants and lounge areas.
Not just a shelf: many innovations in construction
The engineering team faced significant challenges during construction. The towers were erected with a slight intentional tilt, so that the added weight of the Link would return them to a perfectly vertical position.
The main section of the "corbel", weighing approximately 8.500 tonnes, was raised 100 meters above the ground in an operation that lasted 12 days. The remaining tip, just 900 tons, was subsequently hoisted and hooked in a second process that lasted another four days.
The Link, in essence, also contributes to structural stability by reducing sway caused by wind, a common problem in tall buildings. That's right: its connective position between the two towers further increases safety.
One Za'abeel, a new page
This building represents an exciting phase in contemporary architecture. A symbol of how vision, engineering and audacity can converge to create something truly extraordinary. On its record-breaking shelf, One Za'abeel rests the new cornerstones of modern architecture.
