Train enthusiasts will be delighted to learn about the new route connecting Portugal and Singapore. It will be the longest train journey in the world, and will outperform other long journeys such as the legendary Trans-Siberian journey, over 9000 kilometers (5.772 miles).
Previously, this rail route ended in Vietnam, but a new high-speed rail link between China and Laos will allow travelers to reach other destinations.
Three weeks (at least) to tell
18.700 kilometers. 11.654 miles. A huge thing. Along the way, travelers will pass Bangkok, Beijing, Paris, Moscow and many other cities covering thirteen European and Asian countries.
Obviously it will not be a single train to make all this journey: there will be several changes of service (and in some ways it will also be good, travelers know this). Before this solution, however, the journey required numerous (and long) bus rides.
It will be a marvel
The new route is aimed precisely at those who want to travel and experience many different cultures in different countries. Hopping on a train allows the interested and daring to explore the world at their own pace, in today's age of fast (and somewhat complex) air travel.
The entire journey will cost over 1000 euros, to be divided into the various tickets needed for the different connection lines provided by this route. With all the difficulties and delays involved, however, it is quite impressive to see that, over 200 years after the first journey on the rail of a mechanical vehicle, a line unites half the world.
