Big changes are always the result of cultural matrices. Change your mind, change your destiny. When it comes to nutrition, then, habits and approach are fundamental: for decades we have been studying the best way to balance weight, or have a healthy and correct diet. What if one of the winning strategies was to rethink the fridge? An appliance that seems to be there, carved in stone. And instead.
Il Fresh Fridge redesigns the essential aspects of a refrigerator. Most of these appliances are practically designed to have one function: keeping food fresh. Fresh Fridge also has “behavioral” functions, working on other aspects such as content and user habits. It's a "pedagogical" fridge, if you can use the term: it wants to promote a healthier lifestyle, linked to a simple diet based on more fruit and vegetables.
A window on health
A few tips that are Columbus's egg for achieving a balanced diet: first of all, a transparent door. Fresh Fridge looks just like the fruit and vegetable section of the supermarket. The fruits are kept on display, reminding the user to eat them when hungry. Not only that: the transparent window actually discourages storing unhealthy food in the fridge, relying on the judgment of those who observe it. No one would keep rotten fruit at home if it were visible, right? Well. With this fridge it is visible. A soft light activates when the camera detects movement, you can't walk past this fridge without seeing what's inside.
Fresh Fridge is essentially a small ecosystem: the refrigerator itself and the smart display. Designed by the award-winning designer Tati Ferrucio, focuses on the whole, rather than on individual food products. The intelligent display, almost a magic wall mirror, is equipped with a touch surface and an integrated camera. It works as a sort of hub for all your information: it allows you to manage inventory, order fresh food online, watch recipe tutorials, video call friends or family while preparing food or while eating. The focus is all around nutrition: for this reason too, in my opinion, the Fresh Fridge can be a second fridge: a "wellness fridge".
The fridge for healthy eating
Below the smart display is the main fridge, which is designed to be slightly more compact than your usual appliance. The Fresh Fridge comes with compartments designed specifically for healthy eating. Compartments designed to accommodate leafy greens (they are at the top, where it is cooler) with fruit and vegetables in the lower spaces. The trays also accommodate prepared/cooked foods like salads, poke bowls, smoothies or cut fruit, with slide-out areas for airtight containers.
Why is it lower than a normal fridge? Because it is also a work surface. Food is prepared directly on the Fresh Fridge. Ingredients remain easily accessible at the bottom, while the smart display at the top lets you check off items from inventory or follow recipe videos. Various doors positioned on the top of the fridge allow you to connect appliances (blenders, induction cookers, rice cookers) and a removable tray acts as a cutting board.
It's not entirely clear whether the Fresh Fridge also reminds you when food is spoiling, but it would be very useful for a zero-waste diet.
Seeing food, interacting with food, fundamental factors: the refrigerator takes the center of the kitchen and becomes a hub for balanced nutrition: the idea is all there. Will it work?
