Come to think of it, the phenomenon of digital nomad women represents a natural extension of the struggle for female independence: the freedom to work anywhere, breaking down geographical constraints and social conventions. But this freedom clashes with a more complex and stratified reality: not all cities offer the same guarantees of safety and hospitality for professionals on the move. A ranking reveals which places in the world ensure the best conditions for digital nomad women, revealing surprising data and debunking some deep-rooted myths.
Safety as a priority for digital nomad women
Data in hand, digital nomad women have very specific criteria when it comes to choosing their next destination. Of course, the climate matters; economic convenience as well. But there is one factor that prevails over everything: the security. It’s not just about crime statistics; it’s about perception, about how comfortable a woman feels walking alone, about the cultural response to the presence of women in public spaces.
La standings di holiday, a well-known holiday home booking portal in Europe, has taken these elements into consideration, analyzing 200 popular cities among digital nomads. And do you know what emerges? That Europe is doing pretty well, with some notable surprises.
Venice is a European leader, but Italy is poorly represented
Who would have thought? Venice takes first place in Europe as the safest city for female remote workers. 78,69% of women say they feel comfortable walking alone through the streets and squares. Perhaps there is a correlation between the lack of car traffic and this perception of safety? Or perhaps, more likely, the magnificent lagoon city is reaping the fruits of the work done with ad hoc projects for digital nomads.
The phenomenon of digital nomad women fits perfectly into the concept of empowerment: more and more women are choosing to work remotely, embracing the freedom to travel and build their careers without geographical constraints.
But where is the rest of Italy? We have to go down to 40th place to find Pisa and even at 48° for Catania. A fact that makes us reflect on the perception of safety in our cities, especially considering our tourist vocation. Milan? Turin? Rome? Genoa? Florence? Naples? None found.
Portugal dominates the ranking
If you are thinking of a safe destination to work remotely, head to the Atlantic coast. Portugal dominates the ranking with 5 cities in the top 20. Harbour, Coimbra, Aveiro, Portimão e Lisbon offer that perfect mix of perceived safety, welcoming attitudes towards women and foreigners, and an already well-established digital nomad community. In Aveiro (which, curiously, is known as the “Venice of Portugal”) as many as 91,45% of women feel comfortable walking alone. An extraordinary fact that explains why the Portuguese country is attracting so many remote female workers, also thanks to a specific visa for digital nomads.
Taipei, the world's queen of security
If we broaden our gaze beyond the European borders, it is Taipei to conquer the global podium. The capital of Taiwan shows impressive data: reliable public transportation even at night, an excellent perception of female safety and advanced legislation on women's rights. It is no coincidence that from 2025 Taiwan has also introduced a specific visa for digital nomads, allowing stays of up to six months.
In short, the world is adapting to this new way of working and traveling. And for digital nomad women, knowing where to feel safest is the first step toward true freedom of movement.
