Welcome to the strangest Grand Prix you've ever seen. There's no smell of petrol here, but the scent of salt and... innovation. The Sardinia Innovative Boat Week 2024 is the nautical equivalent of putting a rocket in your childhood rowboat.
Olbia has suddenly become the center of the world for those who think the future of boating is quiet, clean and, surprisingly, fun. And it will be until tomorrow. On the water, boats that could make even your latest smartphone seem obsolete.
Sardinia Innovative Boat Week, a dive into the future of boating
The Sardinia Innovative Boat Week is not a “simple” regatta like the America's Cup ones that are inflaming the fans in Barcelona. It is a real floating laboratory where human ingenuity challenges the waves with technologies that seem to come out of a Jules Verne novel. Boats powered by the sun, silent like marine ghosts, or catamarans that use hydrogen to move. In Olbia, technical tests of the future are on air.
Who are the “sailors” of these ships of the future? Researchers and engineers who pilot what they have designed. It doesn’t get any more impressive than this.
The challenges: more complex than a Rubik's cube
The competitions of the Sardinia Innovative Boat Week would make even an expert sailor’s head spin. They range from classic head-to-head duels (pompously called “match races”) to endurance races. And let’s not forget the slalom, where these high-tech boats zigzag between the buoys as if they were playing an aquatic version of Pac-Man. A way to collect data, exchange ideas and contribute together to the future of sailing.

Names and numbers of the Sardinia Innovative Boat Week
La first edition of the Sardinia Innovative Boat Week 2024 sees the participation of 10 international university teams, of which 4 are Italian. Among these, the following stand out the Unige Electra of the University of Genoa, the Uniboat of the University of Bologna, the Messina Energy Boat of the University of Messina and the Physis PEB of the Milan Polytechnic.
Prestigious teams from the international scene are participating such as the AGH Solar Boat of the University of Science and Technology in Krakow and the Green Foiling Spain of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid. The event, which takes place from 16 to 19 October in the waters of Olbia, is organized by Blu.E Matrix ASD, founded by Admiral Ugo Bertelli, in collaboration with the Solar Sport One Foundation and the FIM (Italian Motorboat Federation), under the aegis of the UIM (Union Internationale Motonautique). There are two classes of boats competing: SOLAR CLASS and UNICLASS, the latter with one-design catamarans provided by the organization.
Conclusion: a dive into tomorrow
The boats that sail the waters of Olbia are also charting a course towards a future where boating is no longer synonymous with pollution. The Sardinia Innovative Boat Week 2024 reminds us that progress does not necessarily have to leave a trail of destruction. Sometimes, technologies like these and others they can leave only a light ripple on the water and a smile on the face of those who love the sea.
So, the next time you see a boat pass by on the horizon, ask yourself: will it be powered by diesel or by dreams? Because after the Sardinia Innovative Boat Week, the line between the two has never been so thin.
