The IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is increasingly putting before our eyes what politics wants to ignore. Again, an irrefutable reality: if we want a sustainable future sheltered from climate change, we must stop burning fossil fuels.
At all costs. Without listening to anyone trying to delay or undermine a meaningful response.
Climate change: act now, not tomorrow
The Chairman of the IPCC, Hoesung Lee, still cultivate a thread of hope (many others don't), but we need to act immediately: to achieve the production of zero impact electricity by 2035 for developed economies and by 2040 for the rest of the world.
The solutions exist and are already available, but the real obstacle to change it is political in nature. Banks, politicians, financiers and of course the fossil fuel industry itself are mainly responsible for the delay in adopting effective measures against climate change.
Carbon capture and geoengineering: the new excuses for not changing
On Futuro Prossimo we give space to all attempts at progress, and we have conceded to research on CO2 capture several articles. Nonetheless, we believe that in the hands of corporations and bureaucrats, carbon capture and the geoengineering are becoming the most used excuses to continue exploiting fossil fuels.
However, both of these solutions have never worked on a large scale and do not offer a concrete solution to the problem of climate change and global warming. Instead of looking for miraculous solutions, we need to focus on what we can do right away: stop burning fossil fuels.
Sun and wind: tertium non datur
Delays and excuses only make the situation worse. It's time to stop listening to those who try to postpone action on climate change. To defeat the powerful interests that hinder change, we do not need "magic technologies", but a massive will from civil society.
The mobilization of citizens, activists and organizations can make a difference and push governments and companies to adopt more ambitious environmental policies.
The message from the IPCC is clear: the solution to the climate crisis is in our hands. Only in this way will we be able to proudly say, if one day someone asks us what we have done to stop global warming, that we have done everything possible.
