Technological innovation and sustainability: the revamping of industrial plants as a tool for the green transition

We hear more and more often about revamping, meaning by this term the replacement or updating of equipment and technologies that are obsolete and which for this very reason are destined to be replaced by more sustainable and modern solutions. It is a process that implies many advantages, starting with the possibility of reduce the amount of waste produced, greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption: therefore, it is the environmental impact of the entire plant that improves. It is evident, in fact, that in recent times there has been an increase in awareness of thenegative environmental impact caused by industrial activities, as a result of which many companies have started looking for solutions that prove to be more sustainable for their activities.

Industrial revamping: why it's important

In a context where governments are adopting measures aimed at reducing the environmental impact related to industrial activities on the basis of more restrictive rules and stricter regulations, here is the role of the revamping of industrial plants takes on a fundamental value. Among other things, it promotes a corporate culture that is sustainable and at the same time aware of environmental issues. But that's not all, because revamping also contributes to collaboration with local communities to reduce the environmental impact as much as possible. Companies therefore have the opportunity to become an active part of the solution, and be involved in building a future that turns out to be more sustainable for everyone.

The effects of industrial revamping

Thanks to industrial revamping plants become more efficient, and this contributes to the development of a safer working environment characterized by optimal conditions. Renovation interventions may concern the structures and mechanical parts of the machines, but also the introduction of modern electronic control systems and new automatisms. The company revamping results in a reduction of machine stops: it is clear, in fact, that as the years of seniority increase, the likelihood of a system crashing increases in parallel, even more so if it is very complex.

Revamping is also important from a perspective of environmental sustainability and, therefore, plays a leading role in a company's green transition. The transition to more modern technologies, in fact, makes the plants more efficient, and therefore capable of consume less energy. Operators can count on a rich set of operating data, thanks to which the work team can be supported in optimizing the production process. A digital ecosystem such as the one that arises from it helps to predict, and therefore to prevent, the operating anomalies that can be verified. A modernized plant is able to offer better environmental performance, by virtue of a higher level of efficiency which translates into greater sustainability. There reduction of dust emission, for example, is one of the objectives that can be achieved in industrial plants where there are ovens. Resorting to revamping means being able to take advantage of the best technologies available to renew all or part of the production lines.

Environmental performance and production needs

The aim is to adopt a modern approach to weaving in a sustainable way the best environmental performance with production needs. It is evident, then, that greater efficiency in the use of materials and energy resources also entails advantages from an economic point of view in terms of higher competitiveness against the competition. The adoption of innovative technologies, in line with what is required not only by the market but also by European guidelines, helps to keep environmental impacts under control and reduce them. Among positive effects of the revamping there is, therefore, the reduction of polluting emissions in a wide range of industrial sectors. The functionality of the systems is maintained in optimal conditions, so that their life cycle can be extended over time.
