The Italian BUL plan

While Europe began its journey towards ultra-broadband in 2010,Italy started starting it in 2015 under the aegis of the government led by Matteo Renzi. The plan envisages the diffusion of ultra-broadband on the Italian territory in order to strengthen the telecommunications network, exactly as established by theEuropean Digital Agenda.

The first step in the Digital turning point was to hold a public race is preferably used for construction e management area of ultra-broadband network. The works have been started in certain areas and are continuing incessantly to achieve a series of objectives, which we will see shortly, some of which have set their deadline for 2026.

The plan plans to implement a number of interventions aimed at the construction of a series of communication networks, made available to telephone operators, in order to be able to give users a complete offer based on a connectivity that touches the 30mbps in the “white areas”, i.e. all those areas in which telephone operators do not invest and which require direct intervention by the State.

Furthermore, the plan provides for a series of actions which we list in the following paragraph.

The strategic objectives for an Italy with ultra-broadband

Among strategic objectives set by the State, to be achieved by 2026, in addition to the coverage of the white areas we find:

  1. The Italy 5G plan: a plan designed to encourage the development and diffusion of 5G networks;
  2. The Italy 1 giga plan: which aims to achieve a connectivity target of at least 1 Gbps download and 200 mbit/s upload by 2026;
  3. Connected school plan: whose objective is to guarantee access to ultra-broadband to all schools in the area;
  4. Connected health plan: as for schools, the promise is to guarantee ultra-broadband to all national health facilities;
  5. The plan for the smaller islands: here the aim is to provide the smaller islands with a fiber optic connection to the islands of Capraia, Salina, Savignana, Alicudi, Panarea, Filicudi, Stromboli, Linosa, Lampedusa, Ventotene, Ponza etc.;

These interventions are accompanied by others with the same aims, but also precise strategies designed to support the need for ultra-broadband internet, issued in the form of vouchers.
