Maybe soon we will no longer need of raising animals to eat meat. And this could have a major impact in the fight against climate change. We talk to the activist about it Nicolas Micheletti, that we already interviewed some time ago about the End The Slaughter Age project.
Hi Nicolas, is there any news on cultured meat and cellular agriculture?
Absolutely yes. A few days ago the European Commission approved the request for the collection of signatures for our European Citizens' Initiative. The objectives that have been accepted are two: remove subsidies from the livestock industry and put subsidies on alternative products, therefore plant-based ones and (obviously) those obtained with cellular agriculture, such as the increasingly famous cultured meat.
Did you expect it? How is this progressing?
I wrote the ICE personally, after several specialized lawyers had asked us exorbitant amounts to carry it out. It is a very important document and I was not sure it would be approved, so it was a surprise for us too: but we worked hard, and now the game gets even more interesting. We already cover the minimum 7 countries needed to apply, but more are being added as well. We would like to be able to find support throughout Europe before launching it.
How does the collection of signatures to support cellular agriculture work? When should he leave?
The European Commission has given us 6 months to choose the departure date. From that moment on, we will have one year to reach the 1 million mark across the EU. We currently plan to launch it in June, so we're working hard to find the missing partners. Signing will be easy, just go on our site and click on the button that refers to that of the European Union.
Were there any reactions to the approval by the European Commission?
In Italy they tried to pass the news on the sly, but abroad a little less. For example, the Spanish meat lobby Agromuralla she said she was "very worried" by this ICE, while several journalists around the EU portray us as a mysterious reality, controlled by who knows who, who takes money from public institutions to attack them. In reality who we are, all our data, are on our platforms and we do not take a cent from the state, ours is a battle to save the planet, animals and people's health.
Why is cellular agriculture good for the planet and health?
Alternative products to meat produce over 90% less greenhouse gas emissions with the same quantity produced, this would be very useful to stop theclimate change. As for health, specifically cultivated meat does not contain antibiotics, hormones, pesticides and above all harmful components present in a natural way can be removed, such as iron EME, or saturated fat and lactose if we are talking about cultured milk. Saturated fat can be replaced with omega-3 fat, which is very good for health unlike the former. In the future you will be able to eat a tasty sausage and it will also be healthy to do so.
A last question. In the last interview you mentioned news about meat grown in Italy. How is it going?
Very good. In Italy there is the Save The Chickens Foundation which is about to start a collaboration with the University of Trento, specifically with Professor Biressi's team, to create cultured chicken meat. It is good that Italy also begins to equip itself on the food of the future, since now they are doing it all over the world. We cannot and must not fall behind as usual, especially in the food and technological fields.
Thanks for the interview Nicolas, and good luck!
