Art. Lebedev Studio has reimagined the traffic light to understand how it can find a place in the near future of transport.
In the last hundred years, traffic has been regulated by the same three colored circles, red, yellow and green: through these lights the traffic light has always spoken a universal language. How could we change it?
The traffic light of the future
There are no longer any technical restrictions on what to view. The traffic light of the future can use digital road signs to manage everything: not just vehicles, but also pedestrians and cyclists.
In collaboration with UOMP Industrial Design Center, Art. Lebedev Studio has devised two traffic light concepts. The first concept takes up the classic look, so as not to confuse: the new design makes use of pictograms, and distributes the flow of traffic in different directions from a single display. In other words? A traffic light that does not simply regulate traffic, but directs it.
The second one concept is an interactive "panel" traffic light. In case there is an emergency situation and the road suddenly changes, this square contraption can also provide a warning signal to all vehicles. There is a built-in camera that allows the operator to analyze the situation on the road. The traffic light keeps an eye on the flow of vehicles and pedestrians to make sure everything moves smoothly and safely.
The traffic light of the future? The node of a circulatory system
The modularity of these solutions will allow the traffic light of the future to extend its potential immeasurably. When necessary, 5G modules, Wi-Fi adapters and more sensors can be added. City hubs will be able to direct traffic, measure air quality, temperature, humidity and urban noise levels.
