The future traffic light? An animated display that doesn't regulate traffic - it directs it.

From the round, colorful old headlight to a smart hub: Lebedev's traffic light of the future makes a lot of sense.

Art. Lebedev Studio has reimagined the traffic light to understand how it can find a place in the near future of transport.

In the last hundred years, traffic has been regulated by the same three colored circles, red, yellow and green: through these lights the traffic light has always spoken a universal language. How could we change it?

Proactive and animated: the two traffic light concepts of the future change data (and appearance!) According to the situation

The traffic light of the future

There are no longer any technical restrictions on what to view. The traffic light of the future can use digital road signs to manage everything: not just vehicles, but also pedestrians and cyclists.

In collaboration with UOMP Industrial Design Center, Art. Lebedev Studio has devised two traffic light concepts. The first concept takes up the classic look, so as not to confuse: the new design makes use of pictograms, and distributes the flow of traffic in different directions from a single display. In other words? A traffic light that does not simply regulate traffic, but directs it.

From the discreet presence of the past decades to the "authority" of today. A device increasingly ... VIGILE, it is appropriate to say.

The second one concept is an interactive "panel" traffic light. In case there is an emergency and the road suddenly changes, this square contraption can also provide a warning sign to all vehicles. There is an integrated camera that allows the operator to analyze the situation on the road. The traffic light keeps an eye on the flow of vehicles and pedestrians to make sure everything moves smoothly and safely.

The second concept has a more traditional appeal. In this, the square central pad houses signage of different types by simply modifying the image inside it. An approach that could be "intermediate", in the direction of a more advanced and interactive solution.

The traffic light of the future? The node of a circulatory system

The modularity of these solutions will allow the traffic light of the future to dramatically extend its potential. When necessary, 5G modules, Wi-Fi adapters and more sensors can be added. City hubs will be able to direct traffic, measure air quality, temperature, humidity and urban noise levels.

The presence of modular sensors of all kinds will allow these traffic "directors" (it will be improper to simply call them "regulators") to take the pulse of the entire city. The vital signs of a place will be under control, and so will the flow of transport.

Systems capable of doing much more than now by making cities smart.
