If we can't stop climate change (and, sorry to say, almost certainly we will not succeed) sea level rise will be a tangible reality within the next 10-15 years, if we don't manage to stop everything in time.
How will we change the way we live, and how will we adapt to our new environment after sea levels rise? Ocean community is a collection of mobile naval units that transform a disaster zone into a living space.
As mentioned, global warming does not appear to be slowing down as we intend it to and there is a strong possibility that many people in coastal areas will lose their land and property in the near future. Also the UN is seriously exploring scenarios in which we will use floating cities. Ditto Russia, which has already made plans.
If the sea takes hold, the alternatives will be few: we will have to consider the sea as a living space. Unique and innovative floating structures will be needed that serve as a fully functional home. And they will also need to have the ability to connect with existing ground infrastructure.
Ocean Community, if the sea becomes the next frontier
If due to rising seas the human frontier will move beyond coastal cities, Ocean Community may become a possibility.
Ocean Community, to be precise, can reside in the ocean and become the natural extension of coastal cities, located approximately 800 meters from the coasts. Not that far from the mainland.
Ocean Community Project di Wojciech Morsztyn just won theEuropean Product Design Award in the Transportation Design category.
An “amphibious” community
Each community consists of four housing units and a docking platform. Each unit can accommodate 2 people.
The docking platform would become the central point from which to supply these units with electricity, fresh water and from which to start waste recycling. This platform would be anchored to the ocean floor to stabilize against wave motion.
Modular life
Several other autonomous modules could then be connected to the housing units for as many purposes.
If a user wanted to have a gym session, they could use an app to request an available autonomous module (gym) to connect with their housing unit.
With the same autonomous system it would be possible to use services usually available only on the mainland, including laundry service, entertainment, cinema, etc.
Ocean Community and sustainability
Using sustainable energy from sun, water and wind, Ocean Community's housing units would be self-sufficient.
Rainwater can be isolated from the drainage system, or even collected to become drinking water. The roof of the housing unit would be equipped with photovoltaic panels, while wind energy would be used to air condition the houses.
