Being stopped by a policeman in the USA may not be a pleasant experience. We have had news many times of delicate situations and then ended well, but everything does not always go smoothly.
For Reuben Brewer, senior engineer of robotics research at the department of applied technologies and science of SRI International (ATSD) and "father" of the police robot, an arrest can even become traumatic or dangerous.
They don't seem so peregrine affirmations.
from video description: “Every year 16.915.140 vehicle drivers are stopped in traffic. 195.078 motorists report that physical force has been used on them and 4.488 police officers are assaulted. 89 of those motorists die and 11 of those officers die.”
For this reason, to avoid such disastrous consequences, Brewer invented a "Robocop" who cannot do or harm himself. “Our police robot will be able to go among people to protect everyone,” Brewer added.
This police robot is not an autonomous android, but more an "offshoot" of the officer, who remains in the car and communicates through this cybernetic medium. The face of the agent is shown on the screen positioned at the height of the "face" of Robocop, who can communicate with the driver via cameras and speakers. The telescoping robotic arm can pick up documents and bring them to the terminal's attention.
All things considered, if the task was just to stop a driver and issue a fine or read documents there is nothing this police robot couldn't do like a real officer. Funny to think it all started in Brewer's garage. It reminds me of something.
Brewer now has big plans for his cop robot.
“This police robot prototype is a work in progress that I started in my garage, and now work at SRI International. Of course, it represents only part of the solution to the problem of violence in situations like this, but I hope that one day it can save lives.", he concludes.
