HIV new discoveries – A pharmaceutical company from Pittsburgh, United States, announces that it has developed a cure for HIV and AIDS. It could totally change the lives of the 36 million sick people around the world.
It's called AGT, American Gene Technologies, is based in Baltimore, was born in 2007 and today has submitted an application for approval to the FDA for a drug that cures for HIV and AIDS. This is not a vaccine like the one whose development it was announced already in 2015, nor of a "normal" arv (antiretroviral) therapy, nor of a cocktail of antiretroviral medicines. According to the company's declarations, it is indeed a definitive HIV cure. I like to take it with a grain of salt and interpret the message as: we have a promising anti-HIV therapy, because HIV can be cured. When it comes to using the word "healing" you always have to be careful.
The document, a huge tome of almost 1000 pages, contains the description in detail of a cure for AIDS, which would be the end of a nightmare started in 1982. When we read between the lines the only message at the basis of such research we understand what a beacon of hope it is. Science is telling us clearly, beyond this single study: AIDS can be cured.
Since then AIDS has caused over 35 million victims, taking away entire populations and an enormous list of famous people suffering from AIDS and famous people dying from AIDS. Freddie Mercury, Isaac Asimov, Michel Foucault and many others. A virus? A plague that has changed the face of society, partially modifying its habits and perception of relationships and sex. A world affected for decades without medicine, or a treatment or a cure being found. Indeed: without even knowing how to treat AIDS.
The therapy
AGT calls cell therapy and genetic discovery AGT 103-T. HIV therapy, in other words, is a single-dose drug that has a definitive AIDS treatment function. Eliminate HIV from the body once and for all.
“It's about moving these people from antiretroviral control to lifelong immunity. An HIV cure. We think this project may be able to do that”Said Jeff Galvin, CEO of AGT.
The response from the FDA, the US government body that regulates current drugs and food products, is expected to arrive before the end of the year.
HIV treatment: if the request goes through, we start from the clinical studies in January 2020 and then who knows
If the outcome of the request is positive and the AIDS cure is definitive, the first phase of clinical trials on HIV therapy will be able to begin immediately, as early as January 2020, confirming the “prophecy” made by Luca Pani, Director General of the Italian Medicines Agency (Aifa).
At that time, April 2016, hope was very high. Pani hoped for rapid developments in the treatments for AIDS that emerged at the time. “Preventing contagion,” he said, “would mean dealing a major blow to the disease, preventing it from spreading like wildfire throughout the world. And unfortunately the percentages of contagionTo date, they are growing by at least 4% every year." “In general, new scenarios will open up in the coming years for oncological, infectious and neurodegenerative diseases,” continued Pani, perhaps evoking rhotic pharmaceuticals.
Lower costs of the last hiv treatments were also expected compared to the costs of the current therapies, unlike what happened for example with hepatitis C.
Definitive AIDS treatment: towards the three (long) clinical phases
As is known, and this must be clarified to prevent this news (which is not "HIV cure discovered", but "company DECLARES that it has HIV cures") from producing unmotivated and childish enthusiasm, it will be necessary to go through the canonical process of the whole experimentation. It takes time, in other words, before bringing HIV towards a cure that works. The three planned clinical phases will take a few years, a fourth will be started to evaluate the effects of the drug in treating the pathology after its release on the market, and so on until the (hopefully) definitive HIV eradication.
Still a few years of waiting, however, but the dream begins now: a long-lasting positive response that should sanction the therapeutic goodness of the cure for HIV and AIDS would write a new page of history.
So yes, we could say without hesitation that HIV can be cured, that the AIDS cure exists.
Definitive AIDS cure: updates – Latest HIV: 8 July 2020 –Despite the lockdown, trials continue all over the world. Those that aim to target the virus from the so-called "reservoir" cells could be an HIV drug and cure. A man treated with a new mix of drugs, a 36-year-old Brazilian undergoing treatment in Sao Paulo and HIV-positive since 2012, stopped treatment in March 2019 after treatment and therapy, and the virus has not returned.
