It seems that water is not the most thirst-quenching drink: it confirms it a study by researchers at Scotland's University of St. Andrews.
When it's really hot and you're thirsty, the most thirst-quenching drink is water. Oh yeah, there's nothing better thanwater, no? Of all the thirst-quenching drinks it is the best. Or not? OR NOT? Ready?
No. Errata. There is something better: for example drinks with some fat, protein or sugar, but NOT too much.
Disclaimer: I could have called this post “how to quench your thirst” and made a bunch more visits. But all tastes are tastes, and I don't want to override anyone's, especially when it comes to fresh drinks. But grasp the scientific data, and experiment. Then let me know :)
For example milk
In defining the most thirst-quenching drink, the talented researchers have practically traced the portrait of milk, and it is no coincidence that they mention the drink in the research. Milk contains a sugar, lactose, proteins and fats. Their co-presence slows down the emptying of fluid from the stomach, maintaining hydration for longer and the same sensation of being quenched.
Milk is the perfect thirst-quenching drink because it also has a percentage of sodium, which acts like a sponge favoring water retention and less urine production.
The same mechanism of the thirst-quenching drink intervenes in the products we take to rehydrate ourselves in case of dysentery: liquids containing sugar, sodium and potassium stop the "bleeding" of liquids.
All very nice, drinks as thirst-quenching and as fresh as you like, but the water is more inclusive: it's also good for vegans. And let's face it: it's been a while since we've seen fountains that give milk around.
Hall of Fame, indeed thirst.
And now, for fans of the rankings, the fresh ranking of the 12 most thirst-quenching drinks (able to maintain maximum hydration in the 4 hours following intake), take this into account to quench your thirst on hot summer days:
