The US military is testing an 'intelligent' projectile (do you have doubts about previous definitions of intelligence in relation to weapons? Me too) within a research program called EXACTO (EXtreme Accuracy Tasked Ordinance): in these tests ( started in February 2015 and announced two weeks ago) all participants were able to hit a moving target with absolute precision.
How?
The projectile benefits from a real-time laser guidance system that follows the target and corrects the trajectory if necessary, checking the position 30 times per second. The result? Target hit in all cases. No escape. Here is a small operating diagram:
“This test clearly demonstrates how Exacto is able to hit moving and fleeing targets with incredible accuracy and at a range never achieved by traditional weapons. Being able to enclose the Exacto guidance system in a small .50 caliber is a revolutionary achievement, and paves the way for remotely guided projectiles for every caliber,” he says Jerome dunn, head of the Teledyne Scientific research program funded by DARPA.
